Innovations and long experience in mobile data communications

Aplicom's roots extend to Nokia. As a spin-off of the Mobile Data Unit of Nokia Mobile Phones, Aplicom has been in existence since 1990. Aplicom as a company was created in 1995 through Management Buy Out (MBO) of the Mobile Data Unit of Computec Ltd.


Milestones of Aplicom

1990 - 1994

  • From Mobitex radiomodems to vehicle computers
  • The trademark Aplicom launched in 1990
  • Several thousands Mobitex communication workstations to the Swedish Defence Force
  • Aplicom modular vehicle computer (ICA) introduced in 1994


1995 - 1998

  • Becoming a leading vehicle computer manufacturer in Europe
  • Aplicom Oy established through an MBO arrangement in 1995
  • Building large system integrator network in Europe
  • ADAC followed by other European road assistance organisations equipped with Aplicom vehicle computers in 1996
  • DaimlerChrysler selected Aplicom to supply vehicle computers for its FleetBoard® system in 1998

1999 - 2003

  • Building business growth momentum with next generation embedded computers
  • Value added resellers in over 25 countries (1999)
  • Aplicom C-series introduced in 2001 and F-series in 2002
  • Expanding to fixed telemetry (M2M)
  • Introducing Java based development platform
  • First fork-lift truck customised product (Rocla Abbot System)


2004 - 2006

  • Realising fast growth with global expansion
  • Aplicom telemetry and vehicle tracking platform with Nokia GPRS module inside introduced in 2004
  • 2000 C-units to one of the biggest transport companies in Saudi-Arabia in 2005
  • Aplicom starts manufacturing Nokia’s M2M GMS module business (2005)
  • Aplicom doubles the production volumes of its vehicle telematics products in 2005


2007 - 2010

  • New, universal telematics product family, A1, introduced in 2007
  • Extensive software functionality to A1
  • A1 to include interfaces to digital tachographs, WinCE devices and Garmin navigators
  • Daimler chooses Aplicom A1’s to its European wide road service vehicles in 2009
  • Insurance telematics pilot, PANDA, together with Pohjola Insurance, Nokia, Destia and Astarte
  • Aplicom introduces a Glonass/GPS product especially for the Russian market
  • A1’s quality proved in use by customers (e.g. A1’s RMA=0,5%)
